Hydrogen peroxide (“H2O2”) is a powerful oxidizing agent, much more powerful than aeration, chlorine or potassium permanganate. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into oxygen and water leaving no trace of chemical residues. For problem well water containing iron, iron bacteria, manganese and/or “rotten-egg” sulfur odor “H2S” (hydrogen sulfide gas) hydrogen peroxide systems are an excellent choice.
When peroxide is added to water a large amount of dissolved oxygen is released and a powerful oxidizing effect occurs. Coliform and iron bacteria are killed, and tannins are oxidized. This type of iron filter system handles the absolute worst type of water reliably and effectively.
Peroxide oxidizes the iron, manganese and sulfur odors to a solid form that the catalytic carbon can remove. For many applications no contact tank is required, and the hydrogen peroxide is effectively removed by the catalytic carbon media.

|Frequently Asked Questions About Using Hydrogen Peroxide to Treat Iron
Q. How does hydrogen peroxide treat very bad water with iron and sulfur odors?
A. When water is underground in most wells, iron is in a clear, also known as 'ferrous' or clear water iron. Iron filters must take this clear iron and transform it to rust or ferric iron in the process known as oxidation. Peroxide is a powerful oxidizer, and by adding very small amounts to water before the automatic carbon backwash filter, iron is transformed into a form that the carbon filter can remove.
Q. What is the advantage of hydrogen peroxide as opposed to chlorination?
A. Hydrogen peroxide is made from hydrogen and oxygen.. and when its added to water it rapidly breaks down into hydrogen and water. After the peroxide thoroughly treats the iron, odor and kills iron bacteria, there is no chemical residual left. Chlorine bleach is sodium hypochlorite so there is a small sodium residual added to the water after chlorine interacts with iron and odors.
Q. OK.. what are the disadvantages of peroxide as opposed to chlorine? Why doesn't everyone use hydrogen peroxide for water treatment, instead of chlorine?
A. Hydrogen peroxide costs about three times the cost of chlorine bleach. After the peroxide is added, no residual disinfection agent exists in the water. With chlorine, it can be adjusted so there is some chlorine left in the water to continue to disinfect long distribution lines, or if there is a community system where a chlorine residual is desired or required. Generally however water treated with peroxide is great and has an excellent effect on water quality, making it taste and smell great, especially when combined with catalytic type activated carbons.
Q. Won't I smell and taste the peroxide?
A. No. The carbon backwash filter removes all trace. The metering pump that injects the peroxide is adjustable so very low levels are injected, just enough to treat the water properly.
Q. My community system or small shared well system periodically has coliform bacteria problems, but the other residents on the system do not want to, or have no plans to chlorinate or use a peroxide system. I have to install this right at my house.. Is there anything I can do, just at my own home?
A. Yes, you can install a proportionally-fed chlorine injection system, which injects more or less based on the flow rate of your water. Our standard peroxide systems are installed before the pressure tank where the water is flowing more or less at the same flow rate, so a proportional-fed is not required.
Q. I have 5.0 ppm of iron, some manganese, and mildly bad sulfur odor in my cold water. My toilet flush tank looks orange and seems to have slimy strings of fuzzy iron bacteria growing on the sides. Which iron filter is best for my water?
A. The peroxide injection > contact tank > centaur carbon backwash filter would be just excellent. In some cases you might be able to use it without the contact tank, if your iron is less than 5.0 ppm and the odor is slight.
Q. I have very severe water. My iron is over 10 ppm, I have high manganese, very high hardness, and a terrible hydrogen sulfide problem. Which one should I use?
A. For this type of severe water, we recommend injection of hydrogen peroxide, followed by a contact retention tank, then a Centaur Carbon Filter, then a Sediment Backwash Filter to remove oxidized particles and turbidity down to 5 microns and then finally a water softener.
