birm iron filters

For deep wells, air injection is usually required with Birm iron filters. They are simple to set up and just require an air-injector, air-contact tank with air-vent be installed ahead of the iron filter. If your well has any sediment or sand, we recommend a y-strainer ahead of the air injector and a pressure relief valve be installed prior to the y-strainer.

Q. Why are these systems called "Birm" filters?

A. Birm is a trademark name of the Clack Corp. These iron filters use a type of granular filter media called "Birm". It is manufactured from a type of natural pumice mineral coated with manganese oxide.

Q. Why are these systems called "Birm Blend" filters?

A. A “Birm Blend” filter is a mixture of Birm, a type of iron filter media, and Calcite, a crushed marble product. Birm is a trademark name of the Clack Corp. These iron filters use a type of granular filter media called "Birm" and Calcite media. Birm is manufactured from a type of natural pumice mineral coated with manganese oxide. Calcite is included with your order as well, and is used with the Birm media in the same tank. Calcite is pure calcium carbonate and raises the pH of the water, so the Birm will work.

Q. Why is calcite needed for use in the "Birm Blend" filters?

A. Birm works best if the pH of the water is between 7 and 8, so the calcite raises the pH, neutralizing the acidity of low pH waters, which allows the Birm to remove iron. Once or twice a year, more calcite will need to be added to the Birm Blend filter, to maintain a neutral pH, if the incoming water is acidic.
