An Honest Guide Focus Keyphrase: reverse osmosis irrigation water Slug: /blog/reverse-osmosis-irrigation-water/ Meta Description: High boron, sodium, SAR, or TDS in your irrigation water? RO can solve these problems — but it may not be the right solution for your situation. Gerry from Clean Water Store explains when RO makes sense for irrigation and when lower-cost alternatives work better. ============================================================ -->

If you have received a water test report showing high boron, elevated sodium, a problematic SAR (Sodium Adsorption Ratio), or very high TDS and your plants are showing damage, Reverse Osmosis may have come up as a possible solution.

RO can solve these problems. But it is also one of the most expensive, complicated, and water-intensive treatment options available. And for irrigation specifically (as opposed to drinking water) the scale, cost, and waste water challenges are significantly larger than most homeowners realize before they start getting quotes.

In this video, Gerry from Clean Water Store walks through exactly when RO makes sense for irrigation water, when it doesn’t, and what the hidden costs look like before you commit. Whether you design a water treatment plan with a Reverse Osmosis system with us or not, we provide educational content to help homeowners and businesses make educated choices about their water, before they invest.

Article last updated July 15, 2026 by Author.

What RO Actually Removes From Irrigation Water

Reverse osmosis forces water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure. The membrane rejects dissolved ions, salts, and molecules above a certain size, producing treated permeate on one side and concentrated reject water on the other.

For irrigation water quality problems, RO removes:

Boron — 80 to 95% rejection depending on pH and membrane type. Boron removal is pH-dependent: at higher pH (above 8.5 to 9.0), boron converts to borate ion which RO membranes reject more effectively. pH adjustment upstream improves results significantly.

Sodium and SAR — RO removes sodium ions effectively, reducing both sodium concentration and SAR. This is one of the most direct ways to address sodium-related soil structure degradation.

Chloride — rejected at 90 to 98% by most standard RO membranes

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) — overall TDS reduction of 90 to 99%, depending on system design and incoming water quality

Hardness minerals — calcium and magnesium are removed along with other dissolved solids

On paper, this looks like the complete solution for high-boron, high-sodium, high-SAR irrigation water. In practice, the challenge is scale, cost, and what you do with the waste water.

If you have not yet read our guides on the specific irrigation water problems RO addresses, these are the right starting points: Boron in Well Water: Is It Killing Your Plants? and Is Your Well Water Killing Your Lawn and Garden?

The Scale Problem: Drinking Water RO vs. Irrigation RO

This is the most important thing to understand before evaluating RO for irrigation.

A residential under-sink RO system produces 50 to 100 gallons per day. That is enough for drinking water and cooking — a family of four might consume 2 to 3 gallons of drinking water per day. The system is compact, the membranes are inexpensive, and the reject water — typically 0.5 to 1 gallon per gallon of treated water — goes down the kitchen drain.

Irrigation is a fundamentally different scale. A typical residential irrigation system might run 2,000 to 10,000 gallons per week depending on property size, plant types, and climate. An orchard or vineyard needs far more. To supply this with RO-treated water, you need a system operating at commercial or semi-commercial capacity:

Larger high-pressure membranes and housings

Commercial-grade booster pumps

Storage tanks to accumulate treated water between pump cycles

Pretreatment systems to protect the membrane from iron, hardness, and sediment

A plan for disposing of significant volumes of concentrate

Irrigation RO systems for commercial agriculture are well-established technology — but the infrastructure requirements and costs are substantially different from residential drinking water applications.

Not sure if RO is the right solution for your irrigation water?

Our WQA-certified specialists review irrigation water test results and help you evaluate your options — including whether RO is justified for your specific situation.

Schedule a Free Consultation →

The Reject Water Challenge

Every RO system produces two water streams. The treated permeate is what you want. The concentrate, also called reject water or brine, contains everything the membrane removed, at elevated concentration.

A typical RO system operates at 50 to 75% recovery. That means for every 100 gallons of source water fed to the system:

50 to 75 gallons becomes treated permeate

25 to 50 gallons becomes concentrate that must be disposed of

The concentrate has significantly higher boron, sodium, TDS, and SAR than your original source water. You cannot irrigate with it. It would make your plant problems worse. You cannot discharge it to a storm drain in most jurisdictions. Disposing of it to a septic system in large volumes may not be permissible depending on your local regulations.

Common disposal options for irrigation RO concentrate include:

Municipal sewer connection — if available and permitted

Evaporation pond — requires space and regulatory approval

Deep well injection — industrial scale only

Blending with non-sensitive areas on the property — only if sodium and TDS levels in the blend are acceptable

For most residential properties, concentrate disposal is one of the most significant practical constraints on irrigation RO and one that is frequently overlooked during the initial planning phase.

Pretreatment Requirements

RO membranes are sensitive. Iron, hardness, manganese, sediment, and biological growth all foul membranes prematurely. This reduces output, increasing operating pressure, and ultimately requiring expensive membrane replacement.

Well water used for irrigation frequently contains all of these. A properly designed irrigation RO system requires adequate pretreatment upstream of the membrane:

Sediment pre-filtration — removes particles that would physically clog or abrade the membrane

Iron and manganese removal — iron above 0.1 ppm causes iron fouling on the membrane surface that is very difficult to remove. A dedicated iron filter upstream is required if iron is present

Hardness reduction — calcium carbonate scale on the membrane is a major cause of premature failure. Antiscalant chemical injection or a water softener upstream is typically required

pH adjustment — for boron removal specifically, raising pH upstream improves rejection rates

Biological control — bacteria and biofilm foul membranes. Disinfection upstream and periodic membrane cleaning are standard requirements

The pretreatment system is often as expensive and complex as the RO system itself and it is not optional. Skipping pretreatment and running untreated well water directly through an RO membrane is the fastest way to destroy a significant investment.

The Cost Reality

Here is a realistic picture of what irrigation RO actually costs, which is different from what you might see for residential drinking water systems:

Capital costs: A commercial RO system capable of treating irrigation volumes — typically 5,000 to 20,000+ gallons per day for a residential property with significant landscaping — generally starts at $15,000 to $50,000 or more installed, including pretreatment. Smaller specialty systems for greenhouses or high-value gardens may be less, but still significantly more than residential drinking water RO.

Operating costs: Energy for high-pressure pumps, membrane replacement every 2 to 5 years, pretreatment chemical costs, and maintenance all contribute to ongoing operating expense.

Water costs: At 50 to 75% recovery, you use significantly more water than you deliver to your plants. In drought-prone regions where water costs are high and availability is limited, this waste water factor is a serious constraint.

When Irrigation RO Makes Financial Sense

Reverse osmosis for irrigation is genuinely the right answer in specific situations. The common thread is high economic value of the water application:

Commercial nurseries and greenhouses — precise water quality control directly determines plant health, yield, and product quality. The economics of high-value plant production justify the infrastructure.

Vineyards and orchards — premium crops with water quality sensitivity (citrus, avocado, grapes are among the most sensitive to boron and sodium) and high per-acre economic value

Specialty agriculture — hydroponic systems, high-value vegetable production, cut flower operations

Properties where no practical alternative exists — very high boron or sodium with no blending source, no ability to change plant selection, no access to municipal water for blending

For most residential landscaping, mixed gardens, or standard lawns — the cost of an irrigation RO system is very difficult to justify against the value of the plants being protected. The question becomes whether the same outcome can be achieved more economically through alternatives.

Lower-Cost Alternatives to Consider First

Before committing to irrigation RO, these alternatives are worth evaluating seriously:

Water Blending

If a lower-TDS water source is available — municipal water, rainwater capture, a second well — blending it with your high-problem well water can dilute boron, sodium, and TDS below plant toxicity thresholds without any treatment system. This is often the most cost-effective solution when a blending source is available and the contaminant levels are in the moderate range.

Drip Irrigation

Switching from overhead sprinklers to drip irrigation reduces total water volume applied, eliminates foliar salt exposure (salt burns from sprinkler contact with leaves), and concentrates water delivery to the root zone where managed more effectively. For moderate salinity or sodium problems, drip irrigation alone can reduce plant damage significantly.

Plant Selection

Replacing the most sensitive plants in problem irrigation zones with species that are tolerant of your specific water chemistry is often more practical than treating the water. For boron specifically, tolerant species can thrive at levels that damage sensitive ornamentals. This is a long-term landscaping strategy rather than a quick fix, but worth factoring into the decision.

Gypsum for SAR and Sodium-Damaged Soil

Where high-SAR irrigation water has already degraded soil structure, gypsum (calcium sulfate) amendments can help restore soil porosity by displacing sodium. This addresses the soil damage rather than treating the source water — and is significantly less expensive than RO.

Anion Exchange for Boron

For properties where boron is the primary problem without extreme sodium or TDS levels, boron-selective anion exchange resin can reduce boron concentrations more economically than full RO at moderate treatment scales.

The Right Starting Point: Know Your Numbers

Before evaluating any treatment option, RO or otherwise, you need to know your exact contaminant levels. A water test that includes boron, sodium, SAR, chloride, TDS, pH, iron, and hardness gives you the complete picture.

Without those numbers, you cannot know whether your boron is 0.8 ppm (manageable with plant selection and drip irrigation) or 4.0 ppm (likely requiring treatment for sensitive plants). You cannot size an RO system correctly. And you cannot evaluate whether blending is a realistic option for your specific levels.

At Clean Water Store, we review irrigation water test results and help homeowners and growers evaluate their options honestly, including telling you when RO is not the right fit for your situation and what would work better.

Whether you buy from us or not, we hope this guide helps you make a well-informed decision before committing to a significant investment.

Have an irrigation water test you need help evaluating?

Schedule a free call with one of our WQA-certified water specialists.
