He also covers causes of other unpleasant odors, what kind of water testing is needed, and which systems are best for treating the problem long-term.<\/p>\n<h2>What Causes Odors in Well Water?<\/h2>\n<p>The most common cause of bad-smelling well water is hydrogen sulfide gas, which creates a strong rotten egg odor. This gas can be present in both hot and cold water, although it\u2019s often more noticeable when the water is heated.<\/p>\n<h2>Common Odor Sources Include<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Sulfur and iron bacteria in groundwater<\/li>\n<li>Chemical reactions inside your water heater<\/li>\n<li>Decaying organic matter in soil and rock layers<\/li>\n<li>Low chlorine residuals in city or treated water<\/li>\n<li>Biofilm buildup in pipes<\/li>\n<li>Rarely, contaminants from septic systems or nearby fuel storage<\/li>\n<li>Hydrogen sulfide may also corrode plumbing and appliances, causing black stains or water discoloration from iron sulfide (ferric sulfide) or manganese buildup.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Step One: Test Your Water<\/h2>\n<p>Before choosing a treatment, start with a basic water analysis. Even if you suspect hydrogen sulfide, it\u2019s helpful to know your water\u2019s:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>pH level<\/li>\n<li>Iron and manganese content<\/li>\n<li>Bacterial presence (especially coliform bacteria)<\/li>\n<li>Odor intensity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Run a toilet tank inspection and a smell test using a clean bucket of cold well water. Check both hot and cold taps and see if the odor is isolated to one area or the whole system. Odors in just the hot water may be due to your water heater\u2019s anode rod, which can react with sulfates to produce hydrogen sulfide gas.<\/p>\n<h2>Treatment Options for Well Water Odors<\/h2>\n<p>Gerry outlines four main ways to eliminate odors from well water\u2014three of which are affordable and DIY-friendly:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Aeration<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Introduces air into the water to oxidize hydrogen sulfide<\/li>\n<li>Can be done with a Venturi injector, air injection tank, or air charger filter<\/li>\n<li>Works best with a post-filter to remove oxidized particles<\/li>\n<li>Suitable for homes with light to moderate odor issues<\/li>\n<li>You can even try aeration at home by spraying water into a bucket and letting it sit to see if the odor dissipates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. Chlorination<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>One of the most effective and low-cost options<\/li>\n<li>Kills odor-causing bacteria and oxidizes hydrogen sulfide<\/li>\n<li>Uses a metering pump and contact tank, followed by a carbon or iron filter<\/li>\n<li>Chlorine can be filtered out before the water enters your home<\/li>\n<li>Chlorine works well for hydrogen sulfide levels between 2\u201310 ppm and also disinfects, which is helpful for recurring bacteria issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Hydrogen Peroxide<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Breaks down into water and oxygen, leaving no chemical taste<\/li>\n<li>Preferred by those sensitive to chlorine<\/li>\n<li>Requires the same type of system as chlorination<\/li>\n<li>Not recognized by the EPA as a disinfectant, but highly effective for odor<\/li>\n<li>Hydrogen peroxide is especially useful if your pH is high (above 8), where chlorine becomes less effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>4. Ozone<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Highly effective oxidizer and disinfectant<\/li>\n<li>Breaks down into oxygen with no chemical byproducts<\/li>\n<li>Fully automatic systems are available<\/li>\n<li>Most expensive option, but ideal for high-end or low-maintenance setups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Filters That Work Well With Oxidizers<\/h2>\n<p>To fully eliminate odors, oxidation must be followed by filtration. The most effective filters include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Catalytic Carbon Filters:<\/strong> Ideal for hydrogen sulfide when paired with aeration or peroxide. Last longer than standard carbon and don&#8217;t clog as easily.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Air Charger Sulfur or Iron Filters:<\/strong> Combine aeration and filtration in one tank. No salt or chemicals needed. Great for weekend homes or low-maintenance systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manganese Dioxide Filters (like Pro-OX):<\/strong> Best for removing iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide, especially when used with chlorination.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carbon Filters (in cartridges):<\/strong> OK for light use (like fridges or vacation homes), but not recommended for whole-house systems due to limited lifespan and bacterial growth potential.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Still Smells? Check for Bacteria and Biofilm<\/h2>\n<p>If odor persists in specific taps or only after water has been sitting, you may be dealing with biofilm buildup inside pipes. This happens when sulfur or iron bacteria grow in stagnant water lines, especially in rarely used bathrooms or weekend homes.
