I’m Gerry Bulfin, a water treatment contractor and WQA-certified Master Water Specialist based in Santa Cruz, California. Thanks for tuning in—whether you’re new or a returning listener.

In today’s episode, we’re diving into a topic we get asked about all the time: salt-based water softeners vs. no-salt water conditioners. While most of our episodes focus on well water, this one’s for city water users too—especially those dealing with hard water from calcium and magnesium.

We’ll explore how traditional water softeners work, what no-salt conditioners are (and why we don’t call them softeners), and when not to use a no-salt option. In some situations, a standard softener is the better choice.

For more details, studies, and photos, visit: CleanWaterStore.com/blog/podcast and check out Episode 9.

Let’s start with the basics:

When should you use a water softener?

If your water isn’t leaving spots on dishes or fixtures, and soap dissolves easily, your water is probably already soft—and you may not need one. But if you are seeing scale, it might be time to consider your options.

What is Hard Water?

If your water is hard, we consider water that’s hard over about 5 to 7 grains per gallon. Maybe some water softening salesman would say, the water is hard if it’s over 2 or 3 grains per gallon which is technically true, it has hardness in it but from our experience most people can live pretty good with water that’s less than 7-8, even 10 grains per gallon. Grains per gallon is a measurement of how you can test the water for hardness – how much by weight, how much calcium carbonate is in a gallon of water. For instance: 10 grains per gallon is pretty hard so it’d have a fair amount of calcium carbonate dissolved in it.

Benefits of Soft Water

So if you have less than 10 grains per gallon and you’re not seeing a problem, then don’t worry about it. But a lot of folks in the US, Canada and around the world of course, have very hard water. When it gets up above 8-10 grains per gallon and really 12, 14 & 15 grains per gallon, at that point it’s actually economically feasible to install a water softener or perhaps a no salt water conditioner because it saves you money. It won’t wear out your water heater, and it won’t wear out your clothes by having excess mineral deposits build up in them in the laundry & dryer. It’s also an aesthetic issue because by having soft water, your hair is softer, your skin is softer, and you can use a lot less soap. So basically, you want to use a water softener when your water is hard.

What Water Softeners Do

Well Water Softeners

So traditional water softeners remove hardness scale physically from the water. So if you have hard water and you remove the hardness, then your dishes and fixtures will often be fairly spot-free, you won’t see those white deposits on them, your shower doors will be more spot-free, and everything is so much easier to clean.

The laundry is brighter, you don’t have to use bleach as much, and so there are a lot of advantages to softeners. It extends the life of your appliances, such as your dishwasher and your water heater. So people are often highly motivated to, if they have hard water, to get water softeners.

How a Water Softener Works

A water softener uses resin beads inside a tank, similar to a small oxygen tank. As water flows through, the calcium and magnesium in the water stick to the resin beads. This process is called ion exchange. In exchange, sodium ions are released into the water—this is where the salt comes in. For every bit of calcium removed, an equal or slightly greater amount of sodium is added back.

Sodium doesn’t cause the same scaling problems as calcium, so the water becomes much cleaner. Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and need to be cleaned. Automatic water softeners handle this with a brine tank. At night, when no one is using water, the system pulls in brine to wash and regenerate the resin beads. The calcium and excess salt are flushed down the drain. After this regeneration cycle, the resin beads are ready to soften water again—and the system continues to work efficiently.

Impact of Salt Softener on Wastewater Stream

One issue with traditional salt-based water softeners is that they discharge brine, sodium, and chlorides into the wastewater. This can cause problems—especially in places like California, where treated wastewater is often recycled for golf courses, irrigation, or industrial use. When the sodium and chloride levels are high, it becomes very expensive to treat that water. It’s much easier to clean wastewater when it doesn’t contain excess salt.

There’s been quite a bit of controversy and legislative debate around this. Some regions believe water softeners significantly affect the waste stream. That’s led to growing interest in alternatives, especially from people who want a more sustainable option.

From a consumer standpoint, a no-salt system sounds ideal—soft water without needing to haul salt bags, no electricity, and practically zero maintenance. It seems too good to be true—and sometimes it is. But the systems do work, and there are benefits, as long as you’re clear on what they can and can’t do.

To be fair, salt softeners are still highly effective. And the newer models are more efficient than the older ones. Many use upflow brining and regenerate only when needed, based on actual water usage. That means they use much less salt overall—but they still add sodium to your wastewater.

So, if a no-salt conditioner can do what you need, without contributing to wastewater issues, it’s definitely worth considering. Just make sure you understand the limitations—and set realistic expectations.

No-salt Water Softeners

Some sites, like I said, will call them no-salt water softeners, but that’s kind of stretching the truth. We consider softening as removing the hardness from it, and in a no-salt water conditioner, you don’t remove anything from the water; the water going in is the same hardness as the water going out. The difference is that the actual water is treated so it doesn’t build up scale.

How No-Salt Water Conditioners Work

Salt-Free Softeners Scale Stoppers

Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC) uses resin beads to turn calcium and magnesium into nanocrystals that stay suspended in the water instead of sticking to pipes. The result: scale can’t form, especially in hot-water lines and appliances.

The unit looks like a standard softener tank, but it neutralizes hardness—it doesn’t remove it—so the water still feels hard and may leave spots after evaporation. There’s no simple at-home test for TAC performance, yet lab standards such as Germany’s DVGW W512 show it protects heat exchangers.

Bottom line: TAC systems like our Scale Stopper are excellent for preventing scale and extending appliance life, but they won’t deliver the “silky” feel of traditional salt softeners.

Advantages and Disadvantages of No-Salt

No-salt water conditioners, like our Scale Stopper, work well in hot water conditions (up to 70–80°C), which is where scale buildup is typically a concern—like inside water heaters and pipes. They’re not designed to prevent spotting from evaporated water on tile, glass, or other surfaces. So if you’re frustrated by white residue on your shower doors or faucets, a no-salt conditioner may not solve that.

Some customers report mild improvements with spotting, but we always clarify that these systems don’t soften water in the traditional sense. They prevent new scale from forming inside your pipes and appliances, but they won’t remove existing buildup. If you already have a scale, using something like citric acid might help clean it out.

That’s why we don’t call these systems “salt-free water softeners”—they’re conditioners, and their primary job is to stop scale, not make water feel soft. We do offer a satisfaction guarantee, and while returns are rare, they usually come from people expecting soft water results. If you’ve been using a salt-based softener and are used to silky-feeling water, switching to a no-salt system might feel like a step back.

One common question we get is, “Which type should I use?” The answer depends on your water hardness. If your water is very hard (around 12–15+ grains per gallon), and you care about spotting or want that soft water feel, a traditional water softener is likely a better fit. But if you’re mostly concerned about scale buildup and want a low-maintenance solution without salt, a no-salt conditioner could work well for you.

You can always test your water first—it’s the best way to decide which solution is right for your home.

Template Assisted Crystallization Systems

Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC) systems—also known as no-salt water conditioners—are effective for hardness levels up to 50 grains per gallon. However, they don’t remove hardness, so if your water is 50 grains per gallon, it will still feel hard. In areas where traditional softeners are banned, TAC systems or exchange tank softeners (where the tank is regenerated off-site) are often the only options.

Many homeowners are satisfied with TAC systems, especially when they understand what to expect. These systems don’t soften water in the traditional sense, but they help prevent scale buildup in pipes and appliances. They’re a great option for those who want lower maintenance and no wastewater or electricity usage.

That said, some maintenance is still required. The TAC resin typically lasts 4–5 years, though it varies. While some companies may advertise lifetime warranties, our experience—and multiple independent studies—show that the resin will eventually need to be replaced. You’ll know it’s time when you start to notice scale issues returning. Swapping out the resin isn’t difficult, but it is necessary.

If you’d like more information, feel free to email me at gerrybulfin@cleanwaterstore.com or visit CleanWaterStore.com for additional resources. We also have a blog post on this topic, including links to a 2013 Arizona State study conducted by an engineer and professor in partnership with the Water Reuse Research Foundation. This study explored alternatives to traditional water softening, especially in areas prioritizing water reuse.

Study done by the Water Research Foundation

The Water Reuse Research Foundation did a thorough study on heat exchangers using the DDGW standard. They ran hot water through them for about 20 hours and looked at what worked and what didn’t. The resin we use performed the best—better than other no-salt systems, also known as physical water conditioners. Unlike chemical methods like salt or phosphates, physical water treatment changes the structure of calcium and magnesium so they don’t stick to pipes.

Their results confirmed what we’ve seen firsthand. A few other physical systems didn’t work as well. For example, there are types with a wire you wrap around your pipe and plug in. They’re easy to install, but we’ve found they offer very minimal benefits. Most users still had issues with buildup and heater problems.

The resin system we use—called TAC, or Template Assisted Crystallization—is the same type used in the study. We didn’t sponsor it; we just happen to use that technology. Another system they tested, called capacitive deionization, does remove hardness but wastes about 25% of the water and costs much more—up to 8–10 times the price of standard softeners or no-salt systems. So, while it works, it’s not very practical for most homes.

If you want to learn more about no-salt conditioners, visit us at CleanWaterStore.com.
