Each week, we pick one of the many questions we get and answer it here.<\/p>\n<h2>Today\u2019s Question<\/h2>\n<p>This one is from David:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I use a softener to remove iron? I know I have an iron problem because we get stains on our fixtures and tub. Right now, I have nothing, but my father said he will buy us a water softener. I don\u2019t really think we have hard water, but he says that it will take our iron out, too. What do you think? I was thinking about getting a whole-house water filter from Home Depot, but I don\u2019t like the idea of having to change the filter.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Initial Answer<\/h2>\n<p>Good question, David. Above that, staining is common, and softeners struggle.<\/li>\n<li>Also test the pH. If the pH is high (7.5\u20138 or more), iron is more likely to oxidize into rust, and the softener won\u2019t work as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Clear vs. Rusty Water<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill a white 5-gallon bucket from your well.<\/li>\n<li>If the water is crystal clear, a softener may work better.<\/li>\n<li>If it\u2019s rusty or discolored, you\u2019ll likely have more trouble.<\/li>\n<li>Odor and Hardness<\/li>\n<li>If there\u2019s odor, softeners foul quickly.<\/li>\n<li>If your water isn\u2019t hard, you may not want a softener just for iron because you\u2019ll still need to deal with salt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How Softeners Work with Iron<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Softeners remove calcium, magnesium, and iron using resin beads. They substitute sodium for it.<\/li>\n<li>But if you have too much iron\u2014especially ferric iron\u2014it can clog and foul the resin.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes water even comes out worse.<\/li>\n<li>You can clean resin with rust-removing salt or chemicals, but it\u2019s more work and expense.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>When a Softener Might Work<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Neutral or slightly acidic pH (around 7).<\/li>\n<li>Low iron levels.<\/li>\n<li>When you also want soft water for hardness removal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Better Option: Iron Filters<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/pro-ox-iron-filter-5900-bt-075-cf-844-8x44.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12021\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iron_water_system_5900.jpg\" alt=\"Pro-OX 5900 Iron Filter system with digital control valve and durable tank, designed to remove iron, manganese, and odors from well water.\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" data-id=\"12021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iron_water_system_5900.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iron_water_system_5900-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iron_water_system_5900-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iron_water_system_5900-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iron_water_system_5900-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iron_water_system_5900-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/iron_water_system_5900-120x120.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most of the time, a backwashing iron filter is the way to go.<\/li>\n<li>Iron filters use media that trap iron and then automatically backwash once or twice a week.<\/li>\n<li>No salt, no chemicals, less hassle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What About Cartridge Filters?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Whole-house cartridge filters from places like Home Depot aren\u2019t great for dissolved iron.<\/li>\n<li>Iron passes right through.<\/li>\n<li>Cartridges can also grow bacteria and cause pressure loss.<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019re more of a hassle long-term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Final Notes on Softener Use<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If your water is very acidic (pH 6.5 or lower), don\u2019t use a softener.<\/li>\n<li>Removing hardness in already acidic water can make it even more corrosive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Closing<\/h2>\n<p>Hope that helps, David.<br \/>\nIf anyone else has questions, visit our blog at cleanwaterstore.com\/blog.
