Hope your day is going well. My name is Gerry Bulfin. I’m a water treatment contractor and WQA-Certified Master Water Specialist here in Northern California, and I want to welcome you to the podcast. If it’s your first time, thanks for listening, or welcome back if you’ve listened before. I really appreciated all the feedback and emails about the podcast I’ve been getting, and if you have any questions or if you have any topics you would like to see covered on the podcast, please write me an email.

I like to say you’re in the right place if you want to learn about well water, water treatment systems, or how to improve the quality of your well water or spring water as well.

In this episode, I am going to talk about ultraviolet sterilizers, a very popular device used in water treatment for disinfecting drinking water by destroying microorganisms and pathogens through UV light technology. Ultraviolet sterilizers are especially important when addressing well water contamination, which can pose serious risks to household and community water safety.

Topics we’re going to go over are:

How does it work?

How does UV light disinfect to kill bacteria in the water?

How can I know if UV is right for my particular application?

We are going to talk about the difference between Class A and Class B UV sterilizers and when to use which. Should the water be treated prior to UV? We are also going to talk about parasites such as Giardia and how to service UV sterilizers and how often to service them.

Download Free Guide

I’ve put together a guide on UVs called The Practical Guide to Ultraviolet Sterilizers—a free, easy-to-follow resource with pictures, diagrams, and checklists.

Bacteria can be a serious issue in many water supplies, especially well water. Proper disinfection is critical to keep your water safe from bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Most wells should be tested annually for coliform bacteria, as recommended by the EPA, CDC, WHO, and National Ground Water Association.

Ultraviolet sterilizers offer an effective, chemical-free disinfection method but do not remove chemical contaminants, so additional filtration may be needed for complete purification.

Chlorine is commonly used for disinfection but has limitations and health concerns, especially with high residuals. UV systems are a great alternative, providing chemical-free, effective disinfection when set up properly. For comprehensive water purification, combining UV with other filtration methods like carbon or reverse osmosis is recommended.

How UVs Work

So, how do UVs work? UV sterilizers expose bacteria and other organisms to intense ultraviolet light using germicidal ultraviolet lamps that emit short-wave radiation lethal to pathogens. This radiation disrupts their DNA, preventing reproduction, like giving the bacteria a bad sunburn. UV light used in water purifiers is in the UVC range, known for its germicidal properties.

UV sterilization is a unique and rapid, chemical-free method that disinfects water in seconds. However, it requires very clear water to be effective, as particles can block UV rays. Unlike chlorine, UV provides no residual disinfection downstream, so any contamination after treatment won’t be addressed by the UV system.

Pre-treatment to remove iron, sediment, hardness, and minerals is often necessary to ensure water clarity. While UV sterilizers are mainly used for well and spring water, some use them on city water as an extra safety measure, especially if someone in the home has a compromised immune system. UV water purification is an effective, chemical-free way to rapidly eliminate harmful microorganisms and pathogens.

Advantages of Using a UV Sterilizer

What are the advantages of UV sterilizers? Well, I guess that they are very effective. If they’re set up and sized correctly, virtually all the microorganisms will be susceptible and will be killed. They’re economical. You get hundreds of gallons of water for a low operating cost.

Essentially, the operating cost will be a little bit of electricity, and then you usually have to change the UV lamp once a year; some go longer. UV water sterilizer and UV water treatment systems are highly effective, low-maintenance solutions for water disinfection. They’re safe, there is no danger of overdosing, no addition of chemicals, they’re fast, fast, and water flows right through. That’s it.

The water is disinfected. These devices, also known as water sterilizers, provide safe water by eliminating microorganisms without chemicals. They’re easy to set up. Again, as long as the conditions are correct, they’re fully automatic, and that’s how you want the UV set up. These systems do not require special attention during operation. You don’t want to have to turn it on and off. You want to make sure it either automatically turns on, or most folks just leave it on all the time.

Benefits of Using UV Sterilizers for Well Water

UV water treatment is a highly effective way to disinfect water, but its success depends on key factors. Water clarity is crucial—sediment or particles can block UV light, reducing its effectiveness. That’s why a pre-filter to remove sediment is often recommended.

The UV lamp’s quality and strength matter too. Lamps lose intensity over time, so regular maintenance and replacement are needed to keep the water safe. The water flow rate through the UV chamber is important; if water moves too fast, it may not get enough UV exposure for proper disinfection.

Different microorganisms vary in UV resistance, so the required UV dose depends on what’s in your water. Some need a higher dose for full inactivation. Regular water testing is essential to ensure your UV system works well and your water stays safe.

By focusing on water clarity, lamp upkeep, flow rate, and microorganism types, you can keep your UV water treatment effective and protect your household from harmful contaminants.

Factors Affecting UV Treatment

So, what are the factors that affect UV treatment?

Water treated by UV should be clear and low in minerals, ideally less than 7 grains per gallon or about 120 ppm hardness. The water should be free of color, iron (less than 0.3 mg/L), and manganese (less than 0.05 mg/L). The ideal pH range is 6.5 to 9.5, and turbidity should be under 1 NTU. Usually, a pre-filter is installed to remove suspended solids, often a 5-micron filter if water is already soft and free of iron and manganese. To ensure the removal of parasites such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, a 1-micron absolute filter is recommended in conjunction with UV treatment. UV dosage is important and generally determined when purchasing the system, which is sized for your needs. There are NSF-certified classes A and B for UV systems, which differ in UV dose and features.

Differences between Class A and Class B UV Systems

Class A systems have a higher UV dose to kill pathogenic microorganisms and include fail-safes like alarms and automatic water shutoff if UV intensity drops due to turbidity or quartz sleeve buildup. They also have flow controls to ensure water doesn’t pass too quickly for effective disinfection. Class A systems, rated at 40 million joules per cubic centimeter, are suitable for well and surface waters.

Class B systems have a lower UV dose, fewer fail-safes, and are more affordable. They are effective for water already treated or safe from serious contamination, such as municipal water. Class B systems lack UV intensity sensors and automatic shutoff features but still typically include flow controls to maintain proper disinfection flow rates.

Where to put the UV

One question that comes up is: Where do I put the UV? For your home or business, place it last in line, after any water softeners or filters, so the water is cleanest when it reaches the UV. UV sterilizers don’t provide downstream protection, so they should be installed near the house.

Some people put UV units before storage tanks, but water can be recontaminated there, so it’s best to have a UV sterilizer at the house as well. Routine water testing remains important; home test kits can help monitor bacteria levels affordably.

Regarding parasites like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, they are larger than bacteria and can be removed with a 1-micron absolute filter. These parasites pose risks, especially if your well is shallow or influenced by surface water. Combining a 1-micron filter with UV treatment is an effective method to remove these contaminants.

House Water Filter Options

When it comes to protecting your home’s water, several filter options are available, each with its own benefits. UV water filters and purifiers are popular for killing bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms using ultraviolet light. They offer a chemical-free and effective method of water disinfection.

Reverse osmosis systems remove a wide range of impurities, including heavy metals and chemicals, using a semipermeable membrane. Whole-house filtration systems can address sediment, chemicals, and some microorganisms before water reaches your taps.

Choosing the right filter depends on your water contaminants. For bacteria and viruses, UV water filters are low-maintenance and eco-friendly. For broader protection, combine UV treatment with other methods like reverse osmosis or whole-house filters for safe, clean drinking water.

Regular maintenance and filter changes keep your system working well. By selecting the right filters and UV systems, you can handle many water quality issues and enjoy safe, great-tasting water at home.

What type should I choose?

Use the Class A system if budget allows—it offers a failsafe system with a UV sensor to confirm it’s working. If your water is already safe, but you want extra protection, Class B systems are suitable.

For residential use, size the UV sterilizer according to your pipe size and household needs. For example, a 6 GPM unit works for a small home with 1-2 people, 10-12 GPM suits 1-2 bathrooms with 2-4 people, and 20-25 GPM is ideal for larger homes or multiple residences.

UV sterilizers are easy to maintain; most users leave them on continuously, providing reliable, chemical-free disinfection.

Maintenance & Servicing

If you want to prolong the lamp’s life when away for long periods, you can set a timer with a delay since the UV light takes a few minutes to warm up. Some systems let you flip a switch, and then water flows after a short delay.

Most people leave their UV sterilizers running 24/7, which typically lasts about 9,000 hours or a little over a year. We recommend changing the UV lamp annually, even if it hasn’t burned out, because the glass can become less effective over time, reducing UV transmission.

For best performance, clean the quartz sleeve regularly using alcohol or a mild detergent. Hard water stains can be removed with citric acid or vinegar. Any buildup on the sleeve reduces UV light transmission and system effectiveness.

UV sterilizers consist of a slender stainless steel chamber housing a quartz glass cylinder that protects the fluorescent lamp inside. The UV light kills bacteria without heat, preserving water quality and leaving taste and odor unchanged.

Proper maintenance is key to success; many users have safely used UV sterilizers for years with good water test results.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-13629 aligncenter" src="https://www.cleanwaterstore.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/call-request-cta.jpg" alt="Blue banner with a phone icon and text: “Request a Free Call – 1-888-600-5426.
