In today\u2019s episode, we\u2019re talking about one of the most effective ways to eliminate sulfur odors in well water\u2014hydrogen peroxide treatment.<\/p>\r\n<p>This is the same hydrogen peroxide you find at the pharmacy or supermarket, only in slightly higher concentrations. A few years ago, I wrote a blog post titled \u201cEliminate Well Water Odors: Four Reasons Why Hydrogen Peroxide Water Treatment Is Best.\u201d Since then, we\u2019ve received a ton of questions about peroxide systems. Today, I\u2019ll explain why peroxide is often the best choice to get rid of rotten egg odors in well water.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Why Well Water Smells Like Rotten Eggs<\/h2>\r\n<p>If your well water smells like sulfur or rotten eggs, you\u2019re not alone. Hydrogen sulfide gas is a common problem. At low levels, it\u2019s just unpleasant\u2014but at higher concentrations, it becomes corrosive and damaging to plumbing fixtures, appliances, and pipes.<\/p>\r\n<p>It can also ruin water softeners and filters if left untreated. The smell is often stronger in hot water, especially inside your water heater.<\/p>\r\n<p>Traditional treatments include aeration or chlorination. But chlorine has downsides\u2014it can leave chemical byproducts, a chlorine taste, and it requires higher doses if your water has a pH above 7.5\u20138. Aeration works in some cases, but it doesn\u2019t always eliminate iron or sulfur bacteria, which can continue producing odors.<\/p>\r\n<p>That\u2019s where hydrogen peroxide shines.<\/p>\r\n<h2>4 Reasons Hydrogen Peroxide Works Better Than Chlorine<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li>Faster reaction \u2013 Often, no contact tank is needed.<\/li>\r\n<li>No chemical taste or byproducts \u2013 Peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen.<\/li>\r\n<li>Effective across a wide pH range \u2013 Works even in alkaline water.<\/li>\r\n<li>Improves water taste \u2013 Most homeowners prefer peroxide-treated water over chlorinated water.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>For over a decade, many well water contractors in the U.S. and Canada have turned to hydrogen peroxide injection systems as their go-to odor treatment.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Peroxide vs. Chlorine<\/h2>\r\n<p>So, do we ever recommend chlorine? Yes. Chlorine provides a residual disinfectant, which makes it ideal for municipal systems and distribution pipes. It\u2019s also usually more affordable. The downside is the taste and odor, though activated carbon filters can remove that easily.<\/p>\r\n<p>Hydrogen peroxide, on the other hand, is the \u201cdeluxe\u201d option\u2014better for eliminating odors and iron\/sulfur bacteria.<\/p>\r\n<p>Want to see for yourself? Try this simple test:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li>Fill two jars with untreated well water.<\/li>\r\n<li>Add a teaspoon of bleach to one, and a tablespoon of 3% peroxide to the other.<\/li>\r\n<li>Let them sit for a few hours.<\/li>\r\n<li>Most people notice that the peroxide-treated water smells and tastes much better.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanwaterstore.com\/blog\/eliminate-odors-podcast-episode-6\/\">Read more: How to Eliminate Odors in Well Water\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\r\n<h2>How Hydrogen Peroxide Systems Are Installed<\/h2>\r\n<p>A typical setup is simple:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li>A metering pump injects peroxide into the water line before the pressure tank.<\/li>\r\n<li>Water then flows through a backwashing carbon filter, which removes any residual peroxide and leaves your water clean and odor-free.<\/li>\r\n<li>The carbon filter uses catalytic carbon, which works especially well with peroxide. The catalytic reaction oxidizes hydrogen sulfide right on the carbon, delivering fresh-tasting water to your home.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Do You Need a Contact Tank?<\/h2>\r\n<p>Not always. In many cases, peroxide reacts quickly enough at the carbon filter. Strict precautions are required.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>For most homeowners, 7% hydrogen peroxide strikes the right balance between safety and performance.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Special Considerations for Pump Types<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li><strong>Single-speed well pumps<\/strong> \u2013 A metering pump is wired to turn on with the well pump, injecting peroxide at a steady rate.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Variable-speed\/constant-pressure pumps<\/strong> \u2013 Use a proportional feed peroxide system. A water meter measures flow and adjusts the peroxide dosage automatically. But you\u2019ll still need a filter:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li>Carbon filters can work if iron levels are low, but they\u2019re less reliable.<\/li>\r\n<li>Manganese dioxide filters (like Pro-OX, Filox, Pyrolox) are the better choice for high iron levels. Pairing peroxide with a manganese dioxide filter gives you long-lasting, dependable iron removal.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>For heavy iron + odor problems, we recommend a two-stage system:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li>Peroxide injection with a contact tank<\/li>\r\n<li>Pro-OX iron filter, followed by carbon<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Can Peroxide Kill Coliform or E. coli?<\/h2>\r\n<p>This is a common question. The short answer: not reliably.<\/p>\r\n<p>Peroxide is great for odors and iron\/sulfur bacteria, but it\u2019s a weak disinfectant compared to chlorine or UV. The EPA does not approve it as a primary disinfectant. If you have coliform, we recommend chlorine or UV sterilization after filtration.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Testing and Adjusting Your System<\/h2>\r\n<p>To make sure peroxide is working:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li>Test for a residual of about 0.2\u20130.8 ppm after treatment.<\/li>\r\n<li>With a contact tank, aim for 1\u20132 ppm before the carbon filter.<\/li>\r\n<li>Use test kits or strips to measure peroxide levels and adjust dosage.<\/li>\r\n<li>In most systems, 2\u201310 ppm peroxide is enough for odor removal (up to 15 ppm for severe cases).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h2>Final Thoughts<\/h2>\r\n<p>Hydrogen peroxide injection is one of the most effective and homeowner-friendly solutions for eliminating rotten egg odors in well water.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li>It works faster than chlorine<\/li>\r\n<li>It leaves no chemical taste<\/li>\r\n<li>It handles both hydrogen sulfide and iron bacteria<\/li>\r\n<li>It\u2019s easy to install with a metering pump or proportional feed system<\/li>\r\n<li>When paired with carbon or manganese dioxide filters, peroxide provides clean, fresh, odor-free water\u2014right from your well.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Thanks for listening to the Clean Water Made Easy Podcast.
