    Description

    Pro-OX Manganese Dioxide Filter Media

Pro-OX is a black, granular, naturally mined filter media composed of high-purity manganese dioxide. It is designed to remove iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor) from well water.

Unlike coated filter media such as Birm® or manganese greensand, Pro-OX consists of solid manganese dioxide. This provides faster reaction rates, higher service flow rates, and longer media life in many applications.

Pro-OX can often be used as a replacement for Filox®, Pyrolox®, MangOX®, and other solid manganese dioxide filter media.

    How Pro-OX Works

Pro-OX uses an oxidation-reduction process to remove iron, manganese, and sulfur compounds. As water passes through the media bed, contaminants are oxidized and filtered from the water.

For best performance, most applications use air injection, chlorine injection, ozone, or another oxidizing method ahead of the filter. In many cases, simple aeration provides sufficient oxidation for effective treatment.

Chlorine is commonly used as a pre-oxidant because it improves performance and helps keep the media clean through continuous regeneration.

    Pro-OX Replacement Media Sizing Guide

Many older Clean Water Store Pro-OX systems used a blend of Pro-OX media and Turbidex. When replacing media, you do not need to use Turbidex. Simply refill the tank with the amount of Pro-OX media shown below.

System Size Tank Size Pro-OX Media Required Equivalent 1/2 Cubic Foot Bags
    0.5 Cubic Foot 6" x 35" 0.5 cu. ft. 1 bag
    0.75 Cubic Foot 8" x 44" or 10" x 30" 0.75 cu. ft. 1.5 bags (Order 2 bags)
    1.0 Cubic Foot 9" x 48" 1.0 cu. ft. 2 bags
    1.5 Cubic Foot 10" x 54" 1.5 cu. ft. 3 bags
    2.0 Cubic Foot 12" x 52" 2.0 cu. ft. 4 bags

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does Pro-OX remove? Pro-OX is commonly used to remove iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor) from well water.
Can Pro-OX replace Filox, Pyrolox, or MangOX? Yes. In many applications, Pro-OX can be used as a replacement for Filox, Pyrolox, MangOX, and other solid manganese dioxide filter media.
Do I need Turbidex if my original system used a blend? No. Older Clean Water Store systems often used a blend of Pro-OX and Turbidex. When replacing media, you can refill the filter with 100% Pro-OX media and do not need to purchase Turbidex.
How much Pro-OX media do I need? Use the sizing chart above to determine the correct amount for your tank size. If you are unsure which system you have, contact us and we can help identify it.
Does Pro-OX require chlorine? Not always. Many systems operate successfully with aeration alone. However, chlorine, ozone, or another oxidizer may improve performance depending on your water conditions.
Why is backwashing important? Pro-OX is a dense media that requires adequate backwash flow to lift and clean the media bed. Proper backwashing removes trapped iron and manganese and helps maintain long-term performance.

Need Help? If you're not sure how much media to order, contact Clean Water Store with your tank size and valve model and we'll help you determine the correct amount.
