Description
Reduce PFAS “forever chemicals,” chlorine, sediment, bad taste and odors throughout your entire home with this high-flow whole house PFAS water filter system featuring NSF-certified PFAS carbon block filter cartridges.
This complete filtration system uses two premium 4.5" x 20" Big Blue PFAS carbon block cartridges installed in parallel to provide flow rates up to 8 gallons per minute while maintaining excellent water pressure for most homes with 1 to 2-1/2 bathrooms.
Unlike ordinary carbon filters designed primarily for chlorine taste and odor, these advanced PFAS carbon block cartridges are specifically engineered and independently certified for the reduction of PFOA and PFOS contaminants commonly referred to as “forever chemicals.”
The cartridges are certified by IAPMO to NSF/ANSI 53 standards for PFAS reduction and provide a simple, affordable alternative to large tank-style PFAS treatment systems.
Includes Two PFAS carbon block cartridges for Big Blue filter systems
What Are PFAS “Forever Chemicals”?
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These are man-made chemicals that have been used in many products, including non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, food packaging, industrial coatings and firefighting foam.
PFAS are often called “forever chemicals” because they break down very slowly in the environment. They can enter drinking water from industrial discharge, landfills, airports, military sites, wastewater, firefighting foam use and other sources.
Two of the most commonly discussed PFAS compounds are PFOA and PFOS. This system uses NSF/ANSI 53 certified cartridges for the reduction of PFOA and PFOS, while also reducing chlorine, taste, odor and fine sediment.
How It Works
High Flow Parallel Design
This system uses two identical 20-inch PFAS cartridges plumbed in parallel rather than in series. Water flows through both filters simultaneously, increasing total flow capacity while reducing pressure drop.
This parallel design provides several important advantages:
- Higher overall flow rates
- Improved pressure performance throughout the home
- Longer effective cartridge life
- Better performance during peak household demand
- Excellent whole house filtration capability in a compact design
The dual-cartridge parallel configuration makes this system ideal for whole house PFAS reduction without requiring large backwashing tanks or complicated installation.
Advanced NSF-Certified PFAS Filter Cartridges
At the heart of this system are two high-performance PFAS carbon block cartridges manufactured specifically for reducing difficult-to-remove PFAS contaminants while also providing excellent chlorine, taste, odor and sediment reduction.
Each cartridge features:
- NSF/ANSI 53 certification for PFOA and PFOS reduction
- IAPMO listed water treatment product
- Advanced PFAS-targeted activated carbon block media
- 1-micron nominal filtration for fine sediment reduction
- High-capacity carbon block construction for extended service life
- Standard 4.5" x 20" Big Blue sizing for easy replacement
- Excellent chlorine taste and odor reduction
- Drop-in cartridge replacement with no special tools required
Unlike proprietary PFAS systems requiring expensive replacement cartridges, this system uses standard-sized NSF-certified cartridges that are easy to source and economical to maintain.
What This System Reduces
- PFAS “forever chemicals”
- PFOA, perfluorooctanoic acid
- PFOS, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid
- Chlorine taste and odor
- Chemical tastes and odors
- Sediment and fine particles down to 1 micron nominal
Is This PFAS Filter Right for Your Home?
This system is a good choice for many homes that want a compact, easy-to-maintain whole house PFAS filter system.
Ideal applications include:
- Homes with 1 to 2-1/2 bathrooms
- City water supplies with PFAS concerns
- Homes where the water utility has reported PFOA or PFOS
- Whole house chlorine, taste and odor reduction
- DIY homeowners wanting a compact wall-mounted system
- Customers seeking an alternative to large tank-style PFAS systems
- Homes where space is limited
This system may not be the best choice if the water has heavy sediment, high iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide odor, or unusually high flow demand. In those cases, additional pretreatment or a larger tank-style system may be needed.
Compact Alternative to Large Tank Systems
Unlike large backwashing carbon or resin-based PFAS systems, this compact cartridge system requires:
- No electricity
- No drain connection
- No backwashing
- No complicated programming
- Minimal installation space
This makes it an excellent choice for homeowners looking for effective PFAS reduction with simpler installation, lower upfront cost and easy ongoing maintenance.
Whole House PFAS Carbon Filter vs Reverse Osmosis
Whole house PFAS filtration and reverse osmosis are both useful, but they serve different purposes.
| Whole House PFAS Filter | Reverse Osmosis System |
|---|---|
| Treats water throughout the home | Usually treats one drinking water faucet |
| High flow for showers, sinks and appliances | Lower flow, mainly for drinking and cooking |
| No wastewater | Produces reject water |
| No storage tank required | Typically uses a storage tank |
| Simple cartridge replacement | Multiple filter and membrane changes |
Many homeowners use a whole house PFAS filter to reduce PFAS, chlorine and sediment throughout the home, and then add a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking water.
Complete System Includes
- Two NSF-certified 4.5" x 20" PFAS carbon block cartridges
- Dual Big Blue filter housings
- Heavy-duty steel mounting bracket
- Pressure relief buttons
- Mounting hardware
Easy DIY Maintenance
The drop-in cartridge design allows simple replacement without special tools or complicated servicing. No electricity, programming, backwashing or drain connection is required.
To replace the cartridges, turn off the water, relieve pressure from the housings, unscrew the Big Blue sumps, remove the old cartridges, drop in the new cartridges, check the O-rings, tighten the housings and slowly turn the water back on.
Most homeowners who are comfortable with basic plumbing or changing a standard whole house filter cartridge can replace these cartridges themselves in just a few minutes.
When Should You Replace the Cartridges?
Typical cartridge life ranges from 6 to 12 months depending on incoming water quality, chlorine levels, PFAS concentration, sediment level and household water usage.
Replace the cartridges when flow decreases noticeably, when pressure drop increases, or annually for best performance. For best PFAS reduction, do not wait until the cartridges are completely exhausted.
Frequently Asked Questions
PFAS refers to a large family of chemicals. This system uses NSF/ANSI 53 certified cartridges for the reduction of PFOA and PFOS. No filter should be described as removing every PFAS compound unless the specific compounds are covered by the product certification or test data.
Yes. This system is especially well suited for city water supplies where PFAS, chlorine, taste, odor and fine sediment are the main concerns.
Yes, but well water should be tested first. High sediment, iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide can shorten cartridge life and may require pretreatment before the PFAS filter.
Yes. The carbon block cartridges reduce chlorine taste and odor in addition to certified PFOA and PFOS reduction.
Yes. The cartridges provide 1 micron nominal filtration for fine sediment and particles.
Most homeowners replace the cartridges every 6 to 12 months. Cartridge life depends on water usage, incoming water quality, chlorine level, sediment level and PFAS concentration.
Yes. These are standard drop-in Big Blue cartridges. Most homeowners can replace them by turning off the water, relieving pressure, opening the housings, removing the old cartridges and dropping in the new ones.
No. This system does not require electricity.
No. This is a cartridge-style system and does not require backwashing or a drain connection.
Many homeowners with basic plumbing experience can install this system. It mounts on the wall and connects to the main water line entering the home.
Yes and no. We have tested many of our Backwashing Carbon Filters for bacteria counts over the years and have not found higher levels after the systems. Since the system backwashes with chlorinated water, bacteria growth is obstructed. For this reason, non-backwashing tank-type carbon filter systems should not be used. However, if the chlorine levels are very low in the incoming water, then a UV sterilizer should be used to disinfect the water after the Backwashing Carbon Filter.
Whole house PFAS filtration and reverse osmosis are different types of treatment. This system treats water throughout the home. Reverse osmosis is typically used at one faucet for drinking and cooking water. Many customers choose to use both.
This system is designed for homes with typical flow demand up to 8 gallons per minute, usually about 1 to 2-1/2 bathrooms. Larger homes or higher-flow applications may require a larger PFAS treatment system.
