Our J-PRO-38 proportional-feed chlorinators inject chlorine based on water flow rate to achieve accurate chlorine residuals with the least amount of maintenance. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the output adjustment range of the J-PRO-38?

The J-PRO-38 has a stroke length adjustment knob that goes from 0 to 100%. We recommend operating between 10% and 100% of rated output. Here is what those settings mean in real numbers:

Stroke rate: 180 strokes per minute
Output per stroke at 100%: approximately 0.56 cc (mL) per stroke
Maximum output: 100 mL per minute / 6 liters per hour / 144 liters (38 gallons) per day
At 10% (minimum recommended): approximately 0.056 cc per stroke / 10 mL per minute / 3.8 gallons per day

This wide range gives you precise control to dial in exactly the right chlorine dose for your well, flow rate, and water chemistry.

Is this pump proportional — does it adjust automatically based on flow rate?

Yes. The J-PRO-38 is a proportional-feed chlorinator. The flow sensor detects how much water is flowing and signals the pump to inject chlorine in direct proportion to that flow. When demand is high, the pump injects more; when flow slows, it injects less. This keeps your chlorine residual consistent regardless of how much water you are using — unlike timer-based systems that inject at a fixed rate whether or not water is flowing.

How do I set the output to get the right chlorine residual?

Start with a water test to determine your iron level, bacteria count, and any other contaminants you are treating. A good target for most residential wells is 0.5–1.0 ppm free chlorine residual measured after the contact tank. Begin with the stroke knob set to 100% to prime the pump, then dial it back to an initial setting of 40–50% for normal operation. From there, adjust your chlorine solution strength (bleach concentration) accordingly to achieve your desired residual. What type of chlorine can I use?

Do not use laundry bleach for potable water applications. We recommend 10% or 12% sodium hypochlorite (pool bleach with no additives) or 70% calcium hypochlorite powdered bleach diluted with water.

Why is this better than a Stenner peristaltic pump?

Stenner-style peristaltic pumps use a rubber tube that gets squeezed by rollers to move fluid. Over time that tube hardens, cracks, and fails — requiring replacement every year or two. The J-PRO-38 uses a diaphragm-style pump head with no tube to fail and no rollers to wear out. It is designed for continuous duty, needs less service, and typically lasts many years longer than a peristaltic pump under the same conditions.

What flow rates does the J-PRO-38 work with?

The system works with well water flow rates from 1 to 89 gallons per minute depending on which flow sensor size you choose (3/4", 1", or 1-1/2"). The flow sensor reads accurately down to as low as 0.5 GPM, making it suitable for low-yield wells as well as higher-output systems.
