At Clean Water Store, we’ve helped thousands of homeowners solve tough water challenges, and we back every system with clear return and warranty policies. We think it’s important not to just highlight the good but also to talk about what happens if things don’t work out.

That’s why in this article, you’ll learn exactly what those policies cover, how they work, and the steps to take if your system isn’t performing as expected.

How Clean Water Store’s Return and Warranty Policies Work

Clean Water Store’s warranty protects your investment against defects in materials and workmanship for the long term. Clean Water Store and the original manufacturers back each system’s high-quality components. Here’s what we cover for each major part of your system:

Table showing Clean Water Store warranty coverage by product type: lifetime warranty for residential tanks, five-year warranty for commercial tanks, and five-year warranty for control valves.

One-Year Unconditional Warranty:

For the first 12 months after installation, Clean Water Store covers all system parts and shipping costs if a defect occurs. This includes any valves, fittings, tanks, or internal components found to be defective due to manufacturing or material issues. If something fails within this period through no fault of your own, we’ll replace it at no cost to you — including shipping.

Residential Tanks – Lifetime Warranty:

Our fiberglass, polyglass, or composite mineral tanks used in residential softener and filtration systems are warranted for life against defects in materials and workmanship. This covers issues such as cracking or leaking that occur under normal, protected indoor use. It does not cover external impact, freezing, vacuum damage, or exposure to sunlight or weather

Commercial Tanks – 5-Year Warranty:

Commercial-size tanks (typically 14 inches or larger) are covered for five years. This warranty includes protection against defects that result from normal use in properly installed systems. Like residential tanks, it excludes damage caused by freezing, weather, or external impact.

Control Valves – 5-Year Warranty (Manufacturer-Backed):

Automatic control valves are covered for five years against defects in materials or workmanship. This means the warranty covers internal valve parts, seals, and electronic controls if they fail under normal operating conditions. Damage from power surges, improper wiring, or exposure to the elements is excluded

During the warranty period, defective parts must be returned (freight prepaid) for inspection and replacement. Clean Water Store will repair or replace any part found to be defective under warranty conditions. Labor for installation or replacement is not included.

In short, your warranty ensures that if any covered component fails under normal use, Clean Water Store will stand behind it — replacing the defective part and covering shipping costs during the first year, and continuing to honor tank and valve coverage for years to come.

Can I Return a Water System That’s Been Installed or Used?

Yes. You can return many of our most popular systems, such as iron filters, even after installation, as long as it’s within the six-month window. Our return policy gives you confidence to try a system at home, knowing you still have options if it doesn’t meet your needs.

Which Water Treatment Products Are Non-Returnable?

Special-order items cannot be returned. These products are clearly marked on their product pages, so you’ll know before you buy. Look for labels such as:

  • “NOT STOCK ITEM” — Allow 2–3 weeks for special orders (under the Description tab)
  • Notes on the Warranty tab stating “Special-order items cannot be returned.”

Items like chlorine pellets also cannot be returned due to FedEx and UPS regulations.

If you’re unsure whether an item is considered a special order, check the product’s Description or Warranty tabs before purchasing, or contact us for confirmation.

Who Pays for Return Shipping and Restocking Fees?

The customer always pays return shipping costs. In addition, some products may have a restocking fee of up to 25% of the product’s value, depending on the type of system and its condition upon return. Each product page lists any applicable fees before purchase, so you always know what to expect.

How Do I Start a Return with Clean Water Store?

Starting a return with Clean Water Store is simple. Begin by contacting our support team and providing your order number along with a brief description of the issue. In many cases, our technicians can resolve the problem right away by walking you through a quick troubleshooting process. Often, a simple adjustment to the system’s settings or a replacement part is all that’s needed to get things working correctly.

If we can’t fix the issue remotely, our team authorizes the return and sends detailed shipping instructions. After we receive and inspect your system, we process your refund minus any applicable restocking fees listed on the product page.

What Does Clean Water Store’s Warranty Not Cover?

Clean Water Store’s warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship but does not include damage caused by environmental conditions, neglect, or misuse. Here’s what that means in practical terms:

  • Freezing damage: If water freezes inside your system, it can expand and crack internal components or tanks. Because this results from improper storage or exposure to freezing temperatures, it isn’t covered under warranty.
  • Sun or weather exposure: Systems left outdoors or in direct sunlight may experience fading, cracking, or warping over time. To stay protected, install your system in a shaded or enclosed space away from weather extremes.
  • Neglect or improper care: Skipping routine maintenance, such as backwashing, replacing filters, or checking pressure, can shorten your system’s lifespan. Damage caused by lack of maintenance isn’t covered.
  • Power surges or electrical issues: Storms or faulty wiring can cause sudden voltage spikes that damage control valves and circuit boards. Use a surge protector to safeguard your equipment.

To keep your warranty valid and your system running smoothly, make sure it’s installed in a protected space such as a basement, garage, or pump house and maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
